THE BEING ABROAD SKETCHBOOK CHALLENGE
INFORMATION

What is this?

The Sketchbook Challenge is a different way to submit work to the Being Abroad project. Please visit the main site for full project details.

How does it work?

Once the public deadline of 31st January 2007 has passed, we will send out 10 sketchbooks around the world for people to enter their submissions into directly. Work can of course still be written text, but we would like to encourage more creative entries involving layout, drawings, graphics, stuck in pieces of fuzzy-felt, etc.

How many people can take part?

100. The participants will be split into 10 groups of 10. The sketchbooks will initially be sent out by us to the first person on each list. Once the submission has been completed, the book should be forwarded to the next person on the list and so on, until they are eventually returned to us.

How is this different from regular submissions?

Work submitted in The Sketchbook Challenge has no higher status than regular submissions and inclusion in the final Being Abroad book is not guaranteed. However, we do intend to reproduce the sketchbook pages using their original layout so this is a chance to have more control over your entry. The sketchbook entries will also be given their own section along with a description of the challenge.

How long will I have to complete my submission?

The faster the better! But as a general rule - no more than two weeks, otherwise the rest of your group will unfairly be kept waiting.

How much space do I have in the sketchbook?

There are no minimum or maximum requirements and we hope that the sketchbooks will be big enough for everyone to reasonably use as much space as they require, but of course if the first person fills up every page then the rest of the group will be left with no room, so common sense is required.

When will I receive the sketchbook?

Once all participants have been grouped and assigned a book we will let you know your place in the queue. The books will be sent out at the start of February and allowing for 2 weeks per person, you can approximate when it will arrive at your door.

What if somebody doesn't forward a book? What if a book gets lost?

We hope that the group responsibility involved in each book will secure its wellbeing and we can only cross our fingers that the world's postal services look after them for us.

How do I know who to forward the book to? Who else will see my address?

Once you receive the book you should notify us via our website so we can track its progress. You will then be issued with the name and address of the next member of your group. Therefore only one other participant will ever see your details.

Will I receive money for postage?

You will be expected to pay the postage costs of forwarding the sketchbook yourself and also to ensure that it is well packaged.

Am I allowed to participate if I've already submitted work?

You most certainly are!
